The Forests of Tomorrow Program (projeto Florestas do Amanhã) is an initiative of the Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability (Seas) that aims to reforest 400.000 by 2050, initially counting on government funds in the amount of 100 million dollars. Additionally, 36 million dollars were pledged by the National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES) through the Living Forest Program (Programa Floresta Viva). This is the largest landscape reforestation program in the state.
The largest amount of resources destined to reforestation come from environmental compensation related to the impacts caused by the Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (Comperj), and will be executed through the Atlantic Forest Fund (FMA) on the areas around the Guanabara Bay.
The actions will be focused on the municipalities that are part of the Guanabara Bay Watershed Region, a strategic territory that houses most of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (16 municipalities including the namesake capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro and seven of the state’s ten most populous cities)
Apart from promoting the restoration of the Atlantic Rainforest, the initiative has an impact on the economy by generating green jobs, and makes an important contribution to the achievement of global climate change mitigation goals.
The State plans to extend the program to other Hydrographic Regions, through financial mechanisms for forest restoration foreseen in the Atlantic Forest Fund (FMA).
